Next dates for Open Coffee Bristol

Well that was January, and lots of new faces at 8.30am in the Boston Teaparty.

Last year I put a repeating event on Eventbrite so we had a calendar but that may have caused more confusion than it solved as some people thought they had to book to come along to Open Coffee Bristol. You don’t need to book, just turn up, buy a tasty beverage, perhaps a pastry and join in the business discussions.

The next meetings will be:

  • Tues, 8 Feb, 8.30am until 10am or whenever people have to leave
  • Tues, 22 Feb, 8.30am until 10am or whenever people have to leave
  • Tues, 8 March, 8.30am until 10am or whenever people have to leave
  • Tues, 22 March, 8.30am until 10am or whenever people have to leave
  • Can you spot the pattern yet? :)
  • Tues, 5 April, 8.30am until 10am or whenever people have to leave
  • Tues, 19 April, 8.30am until 10am or whenever people have to leave
  • and fortnightly

You don’t have to attend every meeting, you’re just as welcome to come along to one as to them all.

Jimmy Wales in Bristol

All businesses thrive on good information and the man behind the biggest information site on the web (Wikipedia, in case you weren’t sure) is in Bristol for the day as part of his 10th Anniversary global party!

Jimmy’s user page on Wikipedia is a very insightful read. His 8 founding philosophies would stand well in most socially aware entrepreneurs (though a couple are very Wikipedia-centric).

I’m sure that lots of Open Coffee regulars make frequent use of Wikipedia, I certainly do, and I’m sure we all support Jimmy & Wikimedia in developing their many projects. I look forward to seeing many of you at Jimmy’s talk in the Victoria Rooms,

It’s also worth noting that Jimmy’s presence in Bristol is largely due to our incredible strength in software development, web technologies and the commitment to open and free (as in speech as well as in beer) software across the city.

If you can’t make it, you can watch all the goodness here:

Starting the year in style!

Thanks to everyone that came along this morning! There must have been a few New Year’s resolutions to network with interesting businesses being fulfilled.

Thanks especially to Myles Mayne (website), Tony Coll (), Graham Papworth (), & Peter Philips () for bringing some new perspectives and joining in with gusto. It’s always a pleasure to meet new entrepreneurs from around the city region.

Of course its also great to catch up with friends so good to see Nick (), Helen (), Stephen (), Mark (), Dave (), and Nigel (); I think I remembered everyone!

Lots of good discussions about emerging government statements about support for business innovation and improvement, launching a new business, mobile applications, business models, and that was just my end of the table.

Unfortunately I can’t be at the next meeting on Tues 25 Jan as I’ll be at an iNET launch in Gloucestershire but Nigel Legg has offered to host, so please come along for more great business discussions.

Lots of new people at Open Coffee

Thanks to everyone that came along to this morning’s Open Coffee. Despite having to crowd around the tables a bit it was great to see so many new faces.

I missed a lot of the discussion at the far end of the table between Stephen (@stephenmaudsley), Greg, Nick (@nicksturge), Matt (@PRBristolblog) and Andy, but Bob, Christine, Nigel (@nigellegg), Andrew and myself had a good discussion around hydrogen fuel-cells & alternative fuels, managing multiple websites & social media monitoring. There were also discussions around the future of Local Enterprise Partnerships and what that might (or might not) mean for people around the tables.

We had a few people on holiday and forgetting their bike locks, but a really good turn out. If I didn’t catch your twitter name and you’d like a shout-out, let me know in the comments.

Look forward to seeing everyone again on 24 Aug, same time (8.30am), same place (Boston Teaparty).

Open Coffee, CoWorking & networking across Bristol

OpenCoffee Bristol takes place tomorrow morning, 20 April from about 8.30 in The Boston Teaparty on Park St. Unfortunately I can’t make it this time but I’m sure plenty of regulars will welcome the new folks that have been joining recently.

We’re also getting a bit of friendly cross-promotion from @CoWorkingWest on Twitter where Lee Cottier is flying the standard for start-ups and freelancers organising Jelly co-working venues (Working for yourself, not by yourself).

I also had a great evening with the South West Founders meet-up and hope to be building some cross-connections there also.

Business networking – the Bajan Rum Punch way

When my dad was introducing me to mixing cocktails he taught me the classic rhyme to remember the best punch recipe, ever:

“One Sour, Two Sweet, Three Strong, Four Weak.”

This morning we had one IP patent attorney (Chris Vigars), two connectors / evangelists (me & Martin Coulthard), three support professionals (Zoe Chalk, Charles van der Lande & Robin Beecroft), and four  entrepreneurs (Mark, Ray McConnell, Nigel Legg, and Sam Machin). Seemed like a pretty good mix.

Then I spotted Ian Burden talking to Charles, Zoe and Nigel, and my analogy rather breaks down from there onwards (especially as most people had mixed interests).

Oh well, the discussions were flowing freely. The new influx mixing well with the more regular OpenCoffee folks and a couple of business ideas are already percolating (just to mix my metaphors).

Apologies to anyone that I missed, especially as I had to leave early. Special thanks to Nigel for helping to look after everyone after I left.
